What We Do

Johnson Probing provides environmental field services specializing in direct push sampling of soil and ground water.

Based in the western suburbs of Chicago, we are prepared to support clients throughout the Midwest.

Our services and capabilities include:

  • Direct push soil sampling using a Geoprobe® Dual Tube system for both soil and ground water sampling
  • Installation of temporary piezometer/groundwater monitoring wells. A direct push method 3/4 inch or 1 inch
  • Installation of pre pack wells.

We use the Geoprobe® Model 5400 probe mounted in a Ford F-350 four-wheel drive truck. The 5400 probe is equipped with the newest direct push tooling available: the D-22 Dual Tube system. This sampling system is an efficient method of collecting continuous soil cores with the added benefit of creating a case hole.

The Dual Tube system uses two sets of probe rods to collect continuous soil cores. One set of rods is driven into the ground as an outer casing. These larger diameter rods receive the driving force from the hammer and provide a sealed hole from which soil samples may be recovered without the threat of cross contamination. The second, smaller set of rods is placed inside the outer casing. The smaller rods hold a sample liner in place inside the outer casing which is driven one sampling interval. The small rods are then retracted to retrieve the filled liner.
Geoprobe® Dual Tube sampling benefits include:

  • Continuous coring for faster sampling in intervals over 20-feet.
  • Continuous coring in both saturated and unsaturated zones.
  • Cased hole eliminates cross contamination.
  • Ability to monitor wells through the outer casing after collection of the soil core.

Clients occasionally request services requiring more specialized Geoprobe® equipment, such as track rigs or hand carts. Johnson Probing is pleased to accommodate these requests, although additional scheduling requirements may be necessary due to limited equipment availability.
